Goochland man recalls service to country and returning home

Vietnam is a word that strikes a variety of emotions for Americans. For E-4 Corporal William G. Painter, it was a time of memories, both good and bad. "I recall being 17 when I signed up," Painter said. "I had to get my parents' permission. I thought I was going to the Mediterranean like my brother, but the next thing I know, I'm off to Vietnam." Painter, who grew up in Chesterfield, now calls Goochland home. He and his wife Ann have lived in the Courthouse area for the past 10 years. During his years with the Marines, Painter served two thirteen-month tours in Vietnam with the mine-field infantry division. His job was to sweep fields for enemy....
